The Brazilian Butt-Lift: Fat Transfer to the Gluteal Region

The Brazilian Butt-lift, otherwise known as fat transfer to the gluteal region, is designed to enhance the shape and size of the buttocks. The technique utilizes minimal incisions and allows for a fairly fast recovery and return to normal activity.

Fat transfer is a technique that is several decades old but has only with-n the last years, become fairly standardized and routine. The idea behind the fat transfer is for the surgeon to harvest fat from one region of the body and then transfer it to another region. The fat that is transferred then "takes" as a graft. The components of the procedure were worked out in the 1990's by Dr. Sidney Coleman.

Up until Dr. Coleman's refinements, fat transfer was fraught with fat loss and volume loss after the fat was transferred. What Dr. Coleman discovered was that if the fat was injected in very small amounts throughout a given region, then most of the fat would survive. This is because the small fat cells were surrounded by healthy tissue that would allow for blood vessel in-growth into the transferred fat. The reason fat did not take with other techniques is because the fat was injected as a large glob and new blood vessels could not grow in before the fat began to die.

Dr. Coleman presented his technique using it primarily for facial enhancement in the aging face. Numerous surgeons took that experience and expanded upon it using it for fat transfer in the buttocks, breasts and other soft tissue areas.

There are basically two techniques available to the Plastic Surgeon for enhancing the volume of the buttocks: buttocks silicone implants, and fat transfer.

Fat transfer involves the surgeon using liposuction to harvest fat from one region of the body and then concentrating the fat and injecting it into another. Classically, patients may be bothered by the size of their abdomen or inner thighs. The procedure starts by making a tiny hidden incision in the area for liposuction. Then a fluid called tumescent solution is injected into the fat of the area. The tumescent solution helps prevent bleeding and also provides anesthesia to the area. Classically patients are sedated or asleep for the procedure, however, many have opted to have the operation done while they were awake.

Next, a small hollow tube called a cannula, attached to suction and a collection device, is inserted into the fat. Suctioning of the fat in the region is then performed. It is critical that fine, artistic technique is utilized to aesthetically contour the given region. The harvested fat is then washed and separated from fluid of the liposuction. This concentrates the volume of fat to be transferred.

The patient is then repositioned for the fat transfer. Several small punctures are made in the gluteal region. The concentrated fat is then injected into the gluteal region in small aliquots until the desired shape and size is created. Band-aids are then applied. Patients are instructed not to sit or lay on the area for several days but they may shower and begin activities the next day. The result: an enhanced more shapely buttocks and a contoured smaller region that underwent liposuction.

Butt Implants: Other Plastic Surgery

Conceptually buttock implants, or butt augmentations, are similar to breast augmentations except, of course, with the buttocks instead of breasts. The actual implants themselves are completely different.

Buttock implants are very soft, solid silicone implants and breast implants are more like soft, fluid-filled sacks. The buttock region is an area of the body that is not easily enlarged or shaped with aesthetic purposes in mind.

For those unhappy with the size of their buttocks and wish to enlarge, lift, or shape the buttocks, they now have a variety of buttock implants to choose from. Whether you want to add shape or just want to have a more sensuous backside, the surgical insertion of artificial implants can help.

Butt implants, or buttock implants, are intended for men and women who would like more curves and/or a well-balanced physique. This can improve an individual’s buttock contour by creating a fuller shape. Made out of solid or semi-solid silicone, butt implants have a soft, natural feeling similar to a well-toned muscle.

Typical Minimum Cost of Butt Implants (based on national averages): $5,000.00

Typical Maximum Cost of Butt Implants (based on national averages): $7,000.00

National Average Cost of Butt Implants: $6,000.00

Time Required for Butt Implants: It depends entirely on the type of Buttock Implant, but genral each procedure should take 1 to 2 hours.

Is Butt Implants an InPatient or OutPatient Procedure? Outpatient.

What are the Side Effects of Butt Implants?

Patients may experience pain on the backside during the recovery period after buttock Augmentation. This is because great stress is placed on the buttocks and patients should avoid sitting during the healing process.

What is the recovery time for Butt Implants?

After the Buttock implant, patients will not be able to lie on their backs or put any pressure on theit buttock for 2 weeks. Some surgeons recommend wearing a compression garment during this time to alleviate swelling. You can expect to return to work after these 2 weeks.

Will my insurance company cover Butt Implants?

Insurance ussually does not cover Buttock Implants as it is considered a cosmetic surgery.

What types of anesthesia is necessary for Butt Implants? General anesthesia is administered with Buttock Implants

What else can I combine Butt Implants with? Liposuction

What else is Butt Implants referred to as? Buttock Augmentation, Butt Implants, Gluteal Augmentation

Technology

Typically, a doctor will make an incision where the cheek meets the back of the thigh, or down the crease between both cheeks. Although the incision is usually made in the buttock crease, because scars are not noticeable here (despite this area carrying a high infection risk). He or she will then create a pocket large enough to fit the butt implants, which can be placed underneath the gluteus maximus muscle, or on top of the muscle. Liposuction is occasionally performed in conjunction with buttocks augmentation, in order to enhance the shape of the buttocks.

Butt Implants Risks and Side Effects

All procedures, surgical and non-invasive alike, carry some chances of complications. The butt implants risks and side effects that may arise due to surgery include the following:

Reaction to anesthesia

Infection

Bleeding

Nerve/muscle damage

Asymmetry

A butt implants patient may also experience pain, swelling, numbness, and bruising; all of which should subside within a few days. There is also a chance that an unsatisfactory result will require one or two follow up procedures. A physician will perform an examination to check for any signs that you may experience complications. At this time, it is important for the patient to be open and honest with their doctor. If you feel that you may be at risk for any complications, be sure to tell the surgeon. Butt implant difficulties can also be decreased greatly if the patient follows their surgeon's pre and post-operative instructions.

Lastly, make sure that you select a qualified butt implants surgeon who you feel confident with to perform your procedure. Doctor negligence can, unfortunately hinder a patient's results. This shouldn't be a concern of yours going into surgery.

Other Plastic Surgery: Brazilian Butt Lift

One of the most popular new procedures for butt augmentation, the Brazilian Butt Lift, is a less invasive take on butt implants and butt lift surgery. The procedure itself utilizes donor body fat, which is injected into specific, varied points on the buttocks after being removed via minor liposuction.

Brazilian butt lifts don't involve making incisions in the buttock tissue, and don't require any recontouring of buttock skin and muscle, as is typical with standard buttock lift surgery or butt implants. For this reason, Brazilian butt lifts reportedly require less recovery time, and pose a lesser risk of side effects. Lastly, because Brazilian butt lifts use a patient's own body fat in the injection, there is virtually no risk of allergic reactions and no potential harm from filler absorption.

Cost for this plastic surgery:

Typical Minimum Cost of Brazilian Butt Lift (based on national averages): $8,000.00

Typical Maximum Cost of Brazilian Butt Lift (based on national averages): $15,000.00

National Average Cost of Brazilian Butt Lift: $11,500.00

Time Required for Brazilian Butt Lift: The procedure for this plastic surgery usually takes a minimum of 2 hours, but timing will also be affected by the individual surgeon, and how long the fat purification process takes prior to injection.

Is Brazilian Butt Lift an InPatient or OutPatient Procedure?

Outpatient unless otherwise indicated by the practicing surgeon.

What are the Side Effects of Brazilian Butt Lift?

Side effects from Brazilian butt lifts may include loss of sensitivity or numbness, bruising, swelling at injection site or from the liposuction, temporarily puffy or irregular skin, and slight oozing at injection site.

How Long do Brazilian Butt Lift results last?

Many providers say that if it's performed correctly, Brazilian butt lift procedures can yield permanent results. The biggest factors that can alter a patient's results can include changes in weight, body composition or body fat percentage. Over the years, there's also a chance that some of the original injected fat will be reabsorbed slightly back into the body.

What is the recovery time for Brazilian Butt Lift?

Brazilian butt lift patients should expect to refrain from putting much weight on their behinds for about 2 weeks post procedure. During this 2-week period, patients will also be advised to wear a special garment to help support the newly augmented buttock tissue and prevent excessive swelling. Patients should be back to their normal routines at max, 4 weeks.

Will my insurance company cover Brazilian Butt Lift?

Since Brazilian butt lifts are usually classified as a cosmetic procedure, insurance doesn't usually cover treatment.

Is there much discomfort for Brazilian Butt Lift?

Most patients describe the discomfort as mild. Pain and swelling following surgery usually subsides in a few days.

What types of anesthesia is necessary for Brazilian Butt Lift?

The practicing surgeon will require general or local anesthesia for the liposuction treatment portion, and will likely use local anesthesia for the buttock injections.

What else is Brazilian Butt Lift referred to as?

Butt injections, Brazilian butt injections, butt augmentation, butt lift injections, buttock enhancement, butt fat transfers, fat transfer injections, etc.

What is a Brazilian Buttock Lift?

Whether the Brazilian buttock lift was inspired by the famous posterior of Gisele herself, or created by a Brazilian cosmetic surgeon, we aren't sure. Regardless of its origins, we do know a bit about the procedure itself, and how it corrects flat, saggy buttocks long term. Unlike a standard buttock lift procedure, which involves skin and muscle tissue at the top of the buttocks being surgically lifted and contoured, the Brazilian buttock lift relies mainly on the injection of donor body fat into specific points on the patient's derrière. The donor fat is extracted from areas like the stomach, hips or thighs via liposuction or LipoSelection®, put through a purification process, and then re-injected into the buttocks.

The Brazilian buttock lift can be performed solely with buttock fat injections and minor liposuction, or be combined with the standard surgical lift to provide the most enhanced results possible. The specifics of your buttock lift procedure will depend on your individual goals with buttock enhancement, on your natural body type, and on the amount of donor body fat you have to work with. Patients with smaller frames and a low percentage of natural body fat may find that buttock implants are the only way to achieve the results they're after.

Some advantages of the Brazilian buttock lift over the standard buttock lift or buttock implant procedures include:

Brazilian buttock lifts are said to create a more natural-looking shape and feel, since they are enhanced with the body's own natural fat deposits.

Brazilian buttock lifts can sometimes mean a shorter post-procedure recovery time, since the surgical requirements are less intensive than implant options.

Brazilian buttock lifts are typically less costly than buttock implants.

Brazilian buttock lifts, while not completely permanent, are said to retain most of their injected fat deposits over time. According to Dr. Anthony Griffin, who was featured on ABC's "Extreme Makeover," "at least 50 percent of the re-injected fat" will remain for Brazilian buttock lift patients.
